2019 L'acino 'Chora' Bianco

Italy has the highest number of identified indigneous grape varieties in the world. Over 350 are formally recognised, but there are over 500 known to be grown within the country. In comparison, almost 100% of France's wine only comes from about 60 different varieties. For this reason, we like to treat Italy as a ‘try everything’ country, as opposed to trying to find the best examples of familiar varieties. Tasting without expectation or something to benchmark against is fun, and in few cases leads to the discovery of wines like this. From Calabria in the hot South, this is a blend of Mantonico, Guarnaccia bianca, Greco bianco and Pecorello  (? yeah I’ve not heard of these varieties either). It has extraordinary colour and tannin for a wine with zero skin contact, deep yellow, floral, stone fruity and citrusy, you can drink this now of save it for the warmer months. Is this wine a good example of those varieties? No idea. Is it delicious? Yes idea.
