2019 Alois Lageder ‘Romigberg’ Schiava
Schiava from Italy’s northern alpine region (very North) of Alto Adige was, until falling out of favour in the 1970s, a variety central to wine-making in the area. Schiava is Italy’s answer to Beaujolais Village. Preferring shade, the vines are trained on a ‘pergola’ trellis, think of this like a pergola in your backyard, with the leaves protecting the hanging fruit beneath from direct sunlight. They tend to also be picked relatively early in the season giving freshness, light, rounded tannins and a moderate alcohol content. The Lageder family, with roots in the region since the 1820’s, have got the formula right, and continue to farm this way, though now also have applied strict biodynamic principles. Romigberg is probably the best example I’ve seen of this variety, ruby red, red berries and plums and a soft, smooth finish. This could handle a light chill no problem, and would be perfect with charcuterie, hard cheese and pizza.
